Seven Virginia Episcopal Parishes Vote to Sever Ties

December 18, 2006 at 1:16 pm

The Episcopal Church continues to disintegrate. The most recent wave of bad news comes from Virginia were some very prominent parishes have decided to leave the ECUSA (or are they calling themselves TEC these days?) and will come under the protection of the Province of Nigeria.

While the global debate rages on over what the Anglican Communion will look like moving ahead, the local debates are going to focus on whether parishes that leave the national church will be able to retain ownership of their buildings. In the case of the Virginia parishes above, the church buildings and land are worth quite a lot. Don’t expect the national church to give that up too quickly.
